Ronnie Montrose played the main riff by fretting the A note on the Low E at the 5th fret with his thumb. This gives a more controlled or tighter sound as opposed to playing an open A on the 5th string which is easier for those who don't like using the thumb... But you still have that slide from the 3rd to 5th fret...and is best done with the thumb ... very similar to the way the riff in ZZ TOPs Tush is played...
