The song's theme and lyrics are based on Dalton Trumbo's 1939 novel Johnny Got His Gun, telling the tale of a soldier who is hit by an artillery shell and loses his limbs, eyes, ears and mouth. His mind functions perfectly, however, leaving him trapped inside his own body (which could also be described as a special form of locked-in syndrome).

这首歌的主题和歌词是源自道尔顿特朗博（Dalton Trumbo）1939年的小说《无语问苍天》（Johnny Got His Gun），讲述第一次世界大战期间（译者注）一个士兵被炮弹击中，失去了四肢，眼睛，耳朵和嘴的故事。士兵的意识清楚完整，却自己困在自己的身体里面（这也被描述为一种特殊的闭锁综合征）。
