This tab is Tuck's accompinying of Patti's song "Better than anything". Because she's singing like she's playing percussion, I didn't even try to tab her part. I challenge you to give it a shot. This tab does not even try to fully match the sound of Tuck's very complicated and brilliant play. I wrote it down while I tried to immitate his play, acting as a menomonic device for me. This tab may help you as well in learning something of his style, but you should really listen to his original recording to get the point and the rhytmic feel. Corrections (many) =============== Most important sections to watch: Sections 1d/2d/3d with chord changes Section 4c with different harmonics Sections 4ad/4d with important chord changes and different fingering General: ======= C1. Ghost/dead notes (x): Many notes I originally tabbed are not really played but just happen when playing. I have placed them in brackets (Eg. bar 38). Other dead notes of which I think Tuck really plays them, are moved to the correct string (Eg. bar 27). Often they are (a) the result of quickly playing the basic rhythm while moving your hand already to the next chord or (b) extreme staccato playing which makes the note more like a tick then a full tone. C2. Phrased notes: Some notes I thought were played, probably aren't: a single note may be "phrased" by another note (which seems to devide it rhytmically in two) or by Pat's singing. (E.g. bar 16 or bar 43). C3. Harmonics/reverb: Some notes I thought were played are probably just higher harmonics in combination with reverb and just happen when playing. I have removed them (E.g bar 24) C4. Rhytm: Note: although the rhytm is a swing rhytm, Tuck plays it sometimes more towards a punctuated rhythm. I have tried to simplify a few things by using grace notes instead of short beats. This better reflects the basic rhythm (Eg. bar 28). Both have resulted in a simpler transcription. List of all corrections: ================ Bar 2: Palm mute Bar 4-5: Notes and fingering Bar 6-7: Palm mute, C2 Bar 16: C2 Bar 24: C3 Bar 27/29/31/37/39 (and many more): C1, moved to correct string Bar 28: C4 Bar 30: C1 (dead note removed) Bar 32: C1 Bar 34: Notes changed Bar 35: Chord is played in basic rhythm. Last note is part of next chord, therfore fingering changed. Bar 38: C1 Bar 41: Notes between brackets: the result of a delayed slide Bar 41-46: Slide to next beat Bar 43: C2 Bar 44: Slide added Bar 46: C2 Bar 49: Chord corrected! Bar 50: C1 (simplified) Bar 52: C2 Bar 53: C1, Chord corrected! (see also 49) Bar 54: Fingering changed Bar 55: Fingering changed, C1 (note not actually played between brackets) Bar 56: C1 Bar 58: C1 Bar 62: Simplified notation Bar 63: Note is dead note Bar 64: Simplified notation Bar 70: Different timing Bar 71/72/73: Slide to next beat Bar 74: (I'm still not sure) seems more like a slide while playing standard rhythm. Bar 79: Chord corrected! Bar 81: Simplified notation Bar 82: C2 Bar 84-92: After long experimenting, and finding that harmonics at the 5th fret are hardly amplified on my jazz-guitar because they are right above the pickup element, I changed them to harmonics at the 7th fret with consequences for bass note fingering. On accoustic guitar you may play like I originally tabbed, which is somewhat easier. Bar 101: fingering changed Bar 104: minor change Bar 105: C1, grace notes replace by slide (grace note slide over 2 notes doesn't work in GP4) Bar 108: (Duraration grace notes adapted) Bar 109: C2, Chord corrected! Bar 111: Notation changed Bar 113: C1, Chord corrected! (See also bar 109) Bar 115-122: (I'm still not sure about the bass notes, but changed them for the better) Bar 127: Bass note is clearly heard as well Bar 128: Superfluous note removed Bar 131-135: Corrected! (After heaving read an interview about some of his techniques, this is more likely how it was played, sounds better too!) Bar 137: Chord corrected! Fingering bass notes changed Bar 138: Three-note chord -> two-note chord Bar 139: Three-note chord -> two-note chord, slide into next beat Bar 142: Three-note chord -> two-note chord Bar 143: Three-note chord -> two-note chord, bass note changed, slide into next beat Bar 144: Grace-note removed, fingering changed!!! Bar 145: Grace-note moved to first note, slide into next beat Bar 146-147: Slide into next beat Bar 148: Slide added Bar 150: !!! Very important change in fingering and chord Bar 152: Chord changed, slide into next chord Bar 154: Four-note chord -> three-note chord, slides added as grace, dead note at the end Bar 156: !!! Very important change in fingering Bar 157: Dead note is bass note (accidently played dead?) Bar 159-162: Slide into next beat Bar 163: I think the F# should be an E Bar 164: Bass note just before chord is hit, C1 Bar 172: C1, simplified notation
